So yes we are young and maybe we are sometimes too
unreliable. We act like we're grown ups and yet we're like children telling on each other and accusing each other amusingly
of bad behaviour. Between this and that though we are preparing ourselves for the adult world. Last week through chatting
with a fifty year old woman I discovered that maybe adults are just as insecure in life as we are. She was distraught and
felt betrayed that her husband had cheated on her with his therapist. She was telling me the whole story how this woman nearly
destroyed their marriage.
For me it was quite an awkward situation because she
didn't know she was speaking to a nineteen year old kid who barely knows much about love and yet she opened up to me and I
helped her out through my bad experiences. After that chat she kept thanking me for days on end for the advice I had given
her and thought that the huge age gap didn't make a whole lot of difference, that probably us teenagers or youngsters and
adults are pretty much on the same level. Nobody's really going to end up perfect at any age and maybe nobody will ever stick
to all his responsibilities. But enough about that, let's talk about the serious stuff that make up our young lives.
First of all there's education. We hated it when we
were kids, we hated it when we wanted to play, we hated it when we were tired but still had our homework to do. And yet even
now that we're at university we might hate it a little too. In my case, I don't really mind it. I mean I don't hate it but
I wish I had more time to enjoy the free things in life, to save the weak ones and fight injustices. I'm no Bobby Gillespie
mind you but as a girl once said on TV "we ought to study so we can fight the system from the inside". And maybe that's why
I chose Communications so when I'll become a journalist I'll be free so to say to fight the system. Thing is education takes
up three fourths of our time and whether we like some subjects or not we have to study them. But in the long run it's worth
it. Even when you go out in the weekends, people are going to ask you abut topics which are related to what you're studying.
Unfortunately for me, I am interested in topics most people don't like so I pretty much fade in the background.
Education will eventually open all the windows to
success or so they say. I believe that education is just a way up the stratification system. Yes, believe it or not life's
greatest injustice must be the social classes. People do judge you according to what you wear, your background, whichever
course you chose at university or how many piercings you have. It's cruel, it isn't fair and yet we all get bitter and hurt
at the end of the day. We should be respected for what we are and we should not belittle people. So what! I have 8 piecings,
hate me for that! I guess we all try to be rebels at some point in our lives cause society's turned her ugly back on us.
Then there's relationships. Have you noticed how much
society is obsessed about sex? I mean I hadn't noticed this up till maybe last year until it started to affect me and made
me paranoid about things. I guess many people are just going with the flow. What happened to waiting for your true love? What
happened to bringing a rose to the girl you love and what happened to life's sweet romances? Somehow they've faded away and
they only reappear through Consumerist celebrations like Valentine's day, Christmas and maybe also New Year.
Have to admit the best relationship I had was with
a guy who had handmade this Valentine's card and came all the way up to my house even though he was grounded to give me this
card and pressie. It was the sweetest thing and girls do appreciate gestures like these cause it's the thought that counts
not how much money you've spent which again falls under society's ugly habits list.
Then there is Peer pressure. We all get sucked into
this I am afraid at some point of our lives. We get influenced a lot by the people around us because we want to be accepted
by them, we want to be liked and loved so maybe unconsciously we change a little to suit the situation and the need. And these
days, it is quite shameful if you haven't smoked a cig by the age of 18 or got drunk or maybe had some sort of drug. Yes I
still have to have my first cig and get drunk so shoot me!. Friends are really important in a person's life cause they make
us what we are today practically. According to Talcott Parsons, an American Sociologist our friends are our secondary type
of socialization so at the end of it all our character is a mixture of our family's and our friend's and maybe just a pinch
of individualism but every part of our character has been pretty much copied from somewhere.
Where's the free love? When's the time to stop and
feel that sweet zephyr? We don't have the time to stop and think anymore. We just get up, go to University, study, go on IRC
(Horrible habit) and off to sleep. In-between all that there are obviously a couple of minutes where we eat, relieve ourselves,
work out and feel empty. Thankfully some of us have that particular time where we slow down and think about what's going on.
I suggest listening to an environmental CD to help relieve the stress. Living in an urban area is just too stressful. We have
pollution to deal with, nasty neighbours playing Britney's Album full on, walking in the streets bumping into strangers. There
isn't much freedom anymore and yet that's what causes some of our illnesses. We might suffer from nervous breakdown, Asthma
or Nausea. Anything really can come from the smallest twicth of the outside world that is bugging us.
All in all, this argument can go on forever. If you
feel like talking about this, you can email me at the usual addy or talk to me whenever you'll see me. Point is, we'
re young, let's enjoy life. Let's make life one worth living and let's be responsible so as not to hurt
others. Save the environment, beat racism, homophobia, superficiality and xenophobia.
